Officer Duties and Descriptions: VICE PRESIDENT for PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

I. Constitutional Duties
The Vice President for Professional Development shall be responsible for developing and promoting professional development opportunities across the region outside of the annual conference. This includes developing partnerships with state and provincial leadership to bring Association sponsored workshops to members unable to attend the annual conference; as appropriate, working with the annual conference Program Committee Chair to suggest potential speakers and session presenters; responsibility for the new member orientation session at the annual conference; and chairing the Professional Development Committee.

II. Specific Duties

  1. Needs assessment and program planning
    1. Conduct needs assessment of PACRAO members to guide the work of the Committee.
    2. Facilitate active communication with state and provincial leaders regarding professional development needs of their members, particularly those unable to attend the annual conference.
    3. In coordination with state and provincial leaders, develop and promote professional development opportunities, with the goal of providing at least one such opportunity in each geographic area served by the Association every 3 years.
    4. Work with the annual conference Program Committee Chair to suggest potential speakers and session presenters.

  2. Chair the Professional Development Committee
    1. Solicit committee members during new member orientation at the annual conference, during the conference, and via other Association communications throughout the year.
    2. Encourage participation of members who represent the geographic and ethnic diversity of the Association.
    3. Meet with the committee at the annual meeting.
    4. Conduct discussions among committee members electronically throughout the year as needed to promote committee agenda.
    5. Maintain a current list of committee members.

  3. New member orientation
    1. Develop plan for new member orientation at upcoming annual conference in coordination with the Diversity Development Advocate.
    2. Coordinate with General Conference and Program Chairs for the annual conference to assure that time is set and room is reserved.
    3. Develop handouts for the session.

  4. Professional Development and Travel Grants
    1. Gain approval of the Board for grant funds and priorities.
    2. Publicize funding opportunities and deadlines to the membership.
    3. Review applications with the Professional Development Committee and recommend recipients to the Board for approval.
    4. Notify award winners and make announcements via newsletter and at the annual conference.
    5. Work with Treasurer to assure proper disbursement of funds to award recipients.

  5. Conference Responsibilities
    1. The Vice President for Professional Development is normally seated at the head table for the opening session and business meeting sessions.
    2. Coordinate the new member orientation session.
    3. Meet with the professional development committee.
    4. The Vice President’s report at the business meeting includes an update on professional development activities, including the awarding of PACRAO grants.

III. Chronology of Activity

December
  • Prepare article for Winter newsletter soliciting committee members, promoting Professional Development activities, and soliciting ideas for the coming year.
  • Contact state and provincial presidents regarding professional development needs and opportunities for their members.
  • Every other year, conduct needs assessment of membership.
  • Distribute list of committee members.

January
  • Conduct an on-line meeting with Professional Development Committee.
  • Develop annual plan for professional development activities to be conducted during the year.
  • Present annual plan at Board meeting.
  • Meet with Program Committee to suggest potential speakers and programs for the upcoming annual meeting.

February
  • Revise annual plan based on Board feedback.
  • Review annual plan with Committee members via e-mail.
  • Make committee assignments for specific projects.

March
  • Prepare article for Spring newsletter soliciting committee members and promoting Professional Development activities.
  • Prepare information and application for Professional Development and Travel Grants for inclusion in the Spring Newsletter.

April
  • Facilitate progress on specific activities with Committee members and/or local facilitators.
  • Attend AACRAO annual meeting if possible.
  • Attend PACRAO Executive Board meeting at AACRAO.
  • Glean ideas for professional development activities.

May
  • Facilitate progress on specific activities with Committee members and/or local facilitators.

June
  • Prepare article for Summer newsletter promoting Professional Development activities.
  • Submit Professional Development and Travel Grants application for inclusion in the Summer Newsletter.
  • Conduct an on-line meeting with Professional Development Committee.

July
  • Develop report of professional development activities, including plan for new member orientation at the annual meeting.
  • Present report at Summer Board meeting.
  • Coordinate new member orientation with Diversity Development Advocate.
  • Contact annual meeting LAC chair regarding new member orientation needs.

August
  • Prepare article for Fall newsletter soliciting committee members and promoting professional development activities.
  • Review applications for Professional Development and Travel Grants with Committee and recommend recipients to Board.
  • Plan for annual meeting activities.

September
  • Notify grant recipients.

October
  • Finalize plans for new member orientation.
  • Distribute committee meeting agenda to members.
  • Prepare year-end report.

November
  • Conduct new member orientation in coordination with Diversity Development Coordinator.
  • Solicit committee membership at new member orientation and throughout the conference.
  • Chair committee meeting.
  • Conduct needs assessment of conference participants.
  • Make VP report at business meeting.
  • Arrange for reimbursement of grant recipients.
  • If term is finished, meet with new VP to help with transition.
