President's Biography - David Johnston, 2010
Known for his strong leadership and keen interest in technology, David Johnston has been an
involved member of PACRAO since the early 90s. Including his current term as President, David
has also served as the Vice-President for Publications & Information Technology and has
been a member of many program and local arrangements committees. David was integral to the
organization of the Vancouver PACRAO conference in 1997, as well as the AACRAO SPEEDE
conference in Vancouver in the early 90s, and the inaugural AACRAO Technology Conference.
David is currently also the Vice-President of the Alberta Registrar’s Association.
David’s expansive career began at Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Burnaby, British Columbia,
where he held a variety of positions over his 17 years there. He held roles in Admissions and
Recruitment and the Office of Institutional Research, and was the inaugural Director of
Registrar Services at the then new SFU Harbour Centre campus. In addition to his work on the
downtown campus, David also pioneered one of the first “one stop” student support offices in
Canada. David has also implemented several student systems, including a purpose built
registration system for continuing education students.
More recently, David has held the role of Senior Associate Registrar at the University of
California, Davis. After a four year tenure, David returned to Canada and came to his current
institution–the University of Calgary–where he has held the positions of Registrar and
Executive Director of E-Strategy. He is currently the Associate Vice-Provost (Enrolment) and
Registrar.
Born in Alberta, David completed his undergraduate degree at Simon Fraser University. He
completed his Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration at the University of British
Columbia.
